It was invented by a 25-year professional dog trainer, Susan Sharpe, APDT, CPDT, owner of Animals Plus, LLC, and co-owner of Canine Companion dog training center, after studying Dr. Temple Grandin’s concept of “optimal pressure” from her work that revolutionized the cattle industry, in addition to the methods of Tellington Touch and Acupressure.
The combination of Susan's experiences and her search to aid in the improved treatment of animals has driven her to create the Anxiety Wrap -- an alternative or holistic approach to behavior modification for dogs. Conventional medicine, behaviorists, and trainers all have their place and The Anxiety Wrap was not designed nor intended to replace any of them, but rather, to be an alternative addition to the plan.
During Susan’s transition from traditional training to alternative training methods, she realized that animals, though admittedly much different than humans, still possess some of the same physiological and psychological make-up as humans. She read about Dr. Temple Grandin, an autistic doctor, who developed a squeeze machine that applies gentle pressure on the core of a person’s body to help produce a calming effect. She read Candace Pert’s book, The Molecules of Emotion, where Candace wrote that “the body and mind are not separate and one cannot be treated without the other.” When she attended Linda Tellington Jones’ Tellington Touch seminar, the pieces of the puzzle started coming together.
In order to help calm client dogs at her doggie resort, Susan began to experiment using various types of materials on the animal’s body put together in various ways. She found that the more pressure applied to the core of the dog’s body, the more calm the dog would become. Over 90 prototypes were developed as Susan worked to find the exact combination of fabric, style, and pressure that would be gentle and comfortable enough to calm a dog and not stress him further. She found some fabrics were too heavy and would cause a dog to overheat, while some designs were too constricting. She also desired a product owners could feel comfortable leaving the dog alone while wearing, without supervision.
